College, Shmollege, You Got This!

For anyone who doubts how to get a home school kid into college, my 16 yo son is driving home from enrolling himself in Community College. He took the placement test (not needed for every class), met with the academic advisor and will set up his payment plan and purchase the books needed.

It’s. Just. That. Simple.

They have sample placement tests that I don’t think he looked at, but are available to help prepare. Community College is what I call the back or side door entrance. For some Community Colleges, SAT scores are needed. Then sign up and take them. For others, they want to see transcripts. Print them off and mail them. Call the universities and ask the admission officers what is required from a home school student. Bottom line, it’s doable, so if your kid is home schooled and college is in their sights, then do it because you can!

I’m sharing this not to brag, but to show some scared mama that it is VERY POSSIBLE and easy!! My son is taking an Economics class because that’s his interest. I have no clue how many classes he will take or (sit down some of y’all and clutch the pearls) even if he will graduate. What he wants to do in life doesn’t require a college degree, only knowledge (ironically, knowledge that is not taught in any public or private high school or college). We see the mounting costs of college tuition. Knowing the cost coupled with what we know about sustainable wealth, we are cautious to encourage him to go into debt for a college experience.

Bottom Line:

You can do this! Simply surround those babies with what they love and constantly encourage them to love learning. If college is necessary for what God made them to do, then research the admission process and work backwards. Home school mama, you got this!!!
